How It Works

FamilyNewsNow is an internet-based display for iPads, designed to keep people connected through a tailored family news feed. Family members can post short messages, reminders and photos to a loved one’s iPad Display via the FamilyNewsNow website. The Display then rotates slowly through those messages and photos.

How It All Started

Originally developed to support the founder’s mother-in-law, the news and photos on the Family Display help reduce feelings of anxiety and isolation, as well as provide practical help to family members with keeping in touch.

USE CASE 1

PAT: Care Home Resident

Pat is an animal lover who lives in a care home. She is physically disabled following a stroke and has a very poor memory – borderline dementia. Her family live far away but she has friends locally who normally pop in to see her in the care home. They use FamilyNewsNow to post photos of family and reminders of special days. It is helpful not only to care staff but also to other visitors, giving them a focus for conversation and reminiscing. Since Covid-19, friends are also asking if they can post news to the Display … they can!

USE CASE 2

SOLOMON: Home Alone

Widower Solomon lives alone at home in Wales. He can no longer drive and has difficulty getting around. He has a weekly cleaner and daily care visits. Both his sons live in London. One of them donated an unwanted iPad and signed up for FamilyNewsNow. They each post to Solomon’s Family Display. He likes the photos and family news, and especially the text reminders and alerts for the day ahead, telling him which carer is visiting, together with carer team photos and names.
